INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE DIPLOMA PROGRAMME

International Baccalaureate® is a non-profit organization based in Geneva, Switzerland. It associates 5,500 schools in 150 countries. The IB offers four educational programs at the international level for three educational stages:

  • Primary Years Programme (PYP): 3 – 12 years old
  • Middle Years Programme (MYP): 11 – 16 years old
  • Diploma Programme (DP): 16 – 19 years old
  • Career-related Certificate (IBCC): 16 – 19 years old

As part of our high school, we offer a two-year pre-IB preparatory program (equivalent to grades 1 and 2 of high school) and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (equivalent to grades 3 and 4 of high school), the completion of which opens the possibility of studying at all universities in the country and abroad.

Nazareth High School has been authorised to offer the IB DP since 2004, as the 14th school in Poland. Our many years of experience allow us to achieve very high results every year compared to world averages.

The aim of the programme is to provide education at the highest level, shape and develop young people and equip them with the skills necessary to take their first steps in adult life – both professional and personal. The teacher is a signpost and a guide on this way.

Nazareth High School deeply believes that education is the means to creating a better world and emphasizes that education should go beyond mere academic development, cherishing the need for compassion and reflection upon oneself. This means that through education we strive to encourage awareness beyond the individual and their most immediate community.

Additionally, we extend the IB mission statement by incorporating the values promoted by the school, i.e. we aim to bring up new generations in a system of education based on the personalistic concept of the human being as proclaimed by the Catholic Church and in accordance with Christian values, enabling the pursuit of their education to higher levels and an active participation in social life.

The Diploma Programme (DP) curriculum consists of the obligatory Core of three elements (Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service) and six subject groups. Students choose one subject from each group, three of which need to be taken at the Standard Level and three at the Higher Level. The recommended teaching time is 240 hours (6 hours per week for 2 years) for the HL and 150 hours (4 hours per week for 2 years) for the SL.

Theory of knowledge (TOK)
TOK is an interdisciplinary requirement intended to stimulate critical reflection on the knowledge and experience gained inside and outside the classroom. The course challenges students to question the basis of knowledge, to be aware of subjective and ideological biases, and to develop the ability to analyse evidence that is expressed in rational argumentation. To complete TOK students are required to prepare a TOK exhibition in response to one of the prescribed prompts and write a TOK essay for 1.200-1.600 words.
The Extended Essay (EE)
The essay requirement acquaints DP students with the kind of independent research and writing skills expected by universities. The IB recommends that a student devote a total of about 40 hours of private study and writing time to the essay of maximum 4000 words. The essay permits students to deepen their programmes of study, for example, by selecting a topic in one of their higher level (HL) courses.
Creativity, activity, service (CAS)
The CAS component encourages students to share their energy and special talents with others. Students may, for example, participate in theatre or musical productions, sports and community service activities. Students should, through these activities, develop greater awareness of themselves, concern for others, and the ability to work cooperatively with other people. Additionally, all IB DP students at Nazareth High School attend religion classes. For more information visit www.ibo.org.
Classroom teachers and IB examiners work in partnership to ensure that students have ample opportunities to demonstrate what they have learned. Grades reflect attainment of knowledge and skills relative to set standards, which are applied equally to all schools.
Students can get from 1 to 7 points for the exam in each subject, which gives a total of 42 points. Another 3 points can be obtained for the TOK and the Extended Essay, for a maximum of 45 points. To obtain the International Baccalaureate Diploma, you must score at least 24 points and complete CAS.
